That night, as I sat across from that shaking, exhausted family and said the words I have said thousands of times — “She is going to be alright. I promise you, she is going to be alright” — I made a private promise to myself as well. One day, I would write down these stories. Every single one of them.

Dr. Uday Kiran (MBBS) is a psychiatrist and the founder of Bharosa Neuro Psychiatry Hospitals in Hyderabad. For years he has sat with families on the hardest nights of their lives — the nights when a son stops speaking, when a daughter disappears behind a wall no one can name, when shame and silence have done more damage than any illness.
His practice blends evidence-based medicine with a warm, holistic approach — medication, psychotherapy, and family involvement, wherever it helps. The youngest recipient of the Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Award in psychiatry and a Vaidya Sree Award honouree, he wrote these one hundred stories with a single conviction: that mental illness is a medical condition that can be treated, and that no family should walk through it alone.
